History of Gandhi Ganj Library of Chhindwara city

In the first half of the 19th century, then deputy commissioner Chitnavis showed great interest in developing the city of Chhindwara. Ganj was established by the deputy commissioner of British rule, Chitnavis.

Ganj in Chhindwara city was built in the year 1918 under the direction of the Deputy Commissioner. During this time, he had established a library here keeping in mind the convenience of the traders. At that time this library was named Mitra Mandal Library. While Ganj was known as Chitnavis Ganj. Later, when Mahatma Gandhi came here, this place started to be called Gandhi Ganj.

Chitnavis had built the library a two-story building with a small and attractive ground. This library was started with 45 books given by Babu Jag Jeevan Ram. There was a collection of books related to literature and spirituality. Which grew day by day.
There were no means of communication at that time. In such a situation, this library of Mandi used to be a big center of information communication. This library was then the center of literature in the city.
 
Old people of the city say that at that time almost the entire city used to come to the library to read. One had to put a number to get books. The enlightened sections of the city, including merchants, farmers, used to reach here to study literature. Activities here were not limited to books only. Literary seminars were organized by literary lovers here. 

Library renovation-

The Municipal Corporation has taken care of the years' old heritage Gandhi Ganj Library. The Municipal Corporation has renovated the library building. Under which roof, top and bottom hall sealing, repair of broken stairs, tiles, windows, doors, and buildings are painted. Also, underground lighting has been done. All these works have been done keeping the old form of the library intact. For years this demand of the citizens of Chhindwara city was fulfilled by the Municipal Corporation.
